Las Brisas is a private nature reserve located on the lower slopes of Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica. Our primary goal is conservation and scientific inquiry.
What is the Solitary Sandpiper telling us?
September 25, 2013
This Solitary Sandpiper (Tringa solitaria) is a sure sign of two things: fall migration is well underway, and the water level on our ponds is very low due to the extremely dry year we are having at the reserve! We observe this species on an annual basis, especially during its migration southward. Usually it is restricted to one of our ponds which tends to have muddy edges, but this year it has plenty of habitat since most of our ponds are low and they all have muddy flats!
What other effects will this dry year have on the species of Las Brisas?
